Note: The updated Master List of libraries donated to already can be found here (list updated daily):

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=3149.msg119872#msg119872

To donate money and have us buy the DVD  (and not have to read any furthur) go to http://www.davecullen.com/brokebackmountain/adcampaign.html

Our newest campaign is to place the BBM DVD's in libraries and other places.  We especially want to target rural or smaller libraries which may not have the resources of the larger ones.  We are asking the libraries to label our donations with "Donated by Members of the Ultimate Brokeback Forum at http://davecullen.com/forum which, after viewing, will give those who need it a place for support.  Our message, as always, is a positive one of the beauty of love between two people which cannot be denied.

There are three ways you can help:

Method One

Do it yourself! Get a warm and fuzzy feeling! Here are the steps:

1.  Select a library - One of your choosing or go to http://www.pubiclibraries.com
(We suggest a rural or smaller library which may not have the budget for a copy.) Look at the master list thread to see if another
member has already selected that library. That list can be found here:

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=3149.msg119872#msg119872

Here are some great instructions on what to say once you call a library.

http://davecullen.com/forum/index.php?topic=3084.msg198177#msg198177

2.  Call the library and ask it they will accept a donation of the BBM DVD.  If so, discuss the following with them:
     a.  How the DVD will be delivered (by hand, Amazon or other)
     b.  Ask them to apply a sticker on the DVD once it arrives which states "Donated by the Members of the Ultimate Brokeback Forum at http://davecullen.com/forum

3.  Send a PM to Exlibris or post to the thread (Our Missionary Campaign found under Forum Events and Campaigns on the main page).  We need to track the following info:
     a.  If donation accepted:  city/state/country of library
     b.  Donation not accepted:  same info + reason not accepted (so we can address these issues later

4.  Place your DVD order with Amazon via our site or order/buy through another means.  If you order through our site, we will get 6% of the cost and it won't cost you a penny more.  Go to our main page and near the top on the right side you will see "Buy the DVD Through Us" in red. Amazon will ship gift orders anywhere you want.

5. Follow-up with the library once you believe DVD has arrived; it is important to remind them to place our identifying sticker on the DVD.

6.  If you have any problems along the way, PM either Sharyn (member support) or CactusGal (team leader).

7.  You've just help spread Brokeback Mountain's message that love between two people is beautiful and shouldn't be denied.

Method Two

Donate the cost of a DVD to us and volunteers will handle the process of sending the DVD to a library. The donation price would be $20 per DVD to cover paypal expenses and shipping charges.

To donate go to http://www.davecullen.com/brokebackmountain/adcampaign.html

A warm and fuzzy still awaits you but we take away the hassle!

Method Three

Choose a library in another country or an organization anywhere in the world. This is for those who live in other countries or for members who want to donate to GLBT organizations in other countires or in the USA. Simply follow the same steps in Method One above. Warm and fuzzy feelings can reach you too!

You can also use all three methods to make the most impact! We will be asking other sites and organizations to join in our campaign and announcing this campaign to the press worldwide. Help spread the message of BBM! Thanks for all of your support.

Perhaps the American Library Association can help us identify libraries that would be willing to accept a DVD donation.  Donating DVDs to libraries is a beautiful gesture and a great way to share the story of Brokeback Mountain.  Of course, we need to be prepared for right wing extremists to accuse us of trying to inflitrate their communities with the "homosexual agenda."  That, however, is something that we can deal with when the time comes.

I look forward to donating several DVDs to the campaign.

I had this kinda crazy idea a while back when we were debating on what to do next.  This idea accomplishes four wins at once with our money.  We each buy an extra DVD and send it to Sid Gannis, Bruce Davis, Ernie Borgnine, and Tony Curtis.  They get the point about the need to watch the movies next time they vote for the Academy Awards.  Then we suggest to them they could donate them to the library that we have each designated on a letter to them, but only after they have viewed them of course.  Would love to watch a UPS truck pull up to the AMPAS office and unload about 1500 DVD's of the same movie for them to SCREEN.  Or watch a pickup truck dump a load of them right on Tony Curtis' driveway.  If we order from Amazon through this site, we also have supported the Ultimate Brokeback Mountain Forum, and we have sold more copies of the DVD to solidify Brokeback's place in history.  Would take a lot of logistics to get this done, but would be fun, and accomplish all of our objectives.

I wish I knew what to do here. As an example, our local library used to have one of the most amazing collections of occult books. As I watched the collection disappear, I asked a librarian what was happening. She told me that people were checking them out and not returning them. I knew the local district attorney had folks arrested for not returning children's books. So, I asked if they had turned this over to the DA. They said they had, but he refused to press charges.  Then, this is the same town where we had a Baptist minister that used to stand on the town square condemning everyone not following his path into hell. I say hell, in that there was one tiny bit buried in the local paper about him being convicted of molesting the children of his congregation. Like I once told a new minsters wife, welcome to Mexico Mo., the town that makes Paton Place look like Sesame Street.

PS: Mark, I think we are better off giving BBM to folks that might actually watch it.

I also live in a small town in Missouri but it's a rather unpredictable place: definitely down-home white-bread conservative but with a slightly libertarian bent.  "Boy, you can do anything you want in Johnson County!" was the first thing a local said to my husband when we moved there 10 years ago.

Does anyone have any suggestions for approaching libraries and finding out if they'll accept a copy?  I'm a bit nervous about doing that but would be willing to take the plunge anyway in a "missionary" spirit. However, our money, either the fund's or an individual's, would be best spent on DVDs that will actually be used.

I just emailed our local library asking about donations.  I did not yet say 'what' I wanted to donate.  Besides, we have many books we don't really need anymore, such as a huge tome on the indigenous people of Canada  ... someone could use that for research.

You can phone or even visit in person to get their system on donations.  We can think about donating the book to screen and the short story, even the CD, as well.  What does anyone think about that?

PS:  I am up for donating to the rural library dvd fund.  Let me know.

Public Libraries, a state by state listing

http://www.publiclibraries.com/

American Library Association

http://www.ala.org/

LibCat, another library listing by state

http://www.librarysites.info/

Hope that's helpful; it's a marvelous idea.

I'll have to check with our local library. I wonder if you can get DVD's through the inner library loan program. If we can't get BBM into rural libraries, we could let it be known here to seek them out through the loan system. Then, I want to see as many sales and rentals as possible.
Garry
yeah, I want to see that other movie completely off Amazon's best seller list, while BBM is still near the top of the list.

Talk of getting DVD exposure,  I just found out that the Dutch are having all intending immigrants watch a Dvd of BBM as part of the cultural assimilation test...way to go!!.

The premise is; If you are too disgusted by the Idea or the movie, we don't want you in our country.

These guys never cease to amaze me. I must say they are only country in the world that truly get the Idea behind freedom and equality.

Of course the spin on it from the US press is that the Dutch are in effect saying we are a country of homosexuals. Oh Bullocks, I should just leave the states and go live in Holland Grin.

Thank you davideo!

From what I see, publiclibraires.com has the most user friendly list as it gives all the contact information for every library in a state.

What I would suggest is that we direct people to pick a library (or libraries) from that list, contact the library on behalf of the forum, and then make the donation. We can keep a running master list in the second post of this thread showing every location receiving a copy.

How does this sound?

We will need a volunteer very dedicated to this idea to help us keep the master list. This would involve people PMing this volunteer their chosen library or libraries and that person updating the list several times a day. I would envision this list being listed by state and also by country. If anyone wants to volunteer for this, please PM me.

Also, any ideas yet for what to do in other countries?

Please let me know what you think.

DVD Campaign Records Keeper

We need someone to help keep the records for our DVD campaign. This person would keep a master list of all libraries where the DVD had been donated. It will require updating the master list several times each day. The list would be updated by receiving PMs from members and by reviewing the thread for member reports.

If interested, send a PM to peteinportland.

Thanks!

Here's information on 'donating' from one library page:

'DONATIONS/MEMORIALS
Donations of books and materials are always welcome at your local library. All such gifts, however, become the property of the library and must be evaluated and handled in exactly the same manner as purchased materials. No conditional terms of acceptance can be permitted, except that bookplates may be placed in the material if desired by the donor.

For more information on memorials or large monetary donations, please contact your Library Manager.'

I would like to pick at least one library and deal with it myself ... just for the sense of satisfaction, I guess.  Also, I'm willing to contribute specifically to a fund for rural libraries ... or similar.

Let us know when we can start 'picking and choosing'.

I did suggest earlier we consider also donating book to screen, cd, etc, but haven't heard on that.  Do we have (could we have) a bookplate of some sort, so we can be identified?  I'd rather this forum get the credit than me.

PS:  I'd really like to be 'granted' the Riverton, WY, library.  Kiss

yes, a bookplate that can be attached to the inside of the dvd case or book would be great.

this could be as simple as an image which is printed on a sheet of sticky labels.  we could carry over the "thank you" theme of our first ad campaign, advertise this web site, whatever.

Something to keep in mind when inquiring at a library -
ask them if they even carry "R" rated movies - a lot of public libraries don't

my biggest concern with the library donations is people getting excited about finding a library to donate to but the library won't distribute the movie.

Please make sure the donation will be utilized.

Most "R" rated movies make a "PGish" edit for airplanes.  I wonder if they did that for Brokeback.
If they did, perhaps there's a way to get access to the PG version for our project.
