From today's TDS:

Quote
[At the GLAAD Awards] Former President Bill Clinton (pictured with daughter Chelsea) was given the first Advocate for Change Award, which surprised many people considering that it was during his terms as president that the Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA) was signed into law, as well as the Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy.

I guess you just have to be an ADVOCATE for change and not change anything, but what he did was change matters for
the worse for gay people for two decades. I know people really like Bill Clinton but I'm on the side of "he shouldn't
have been awarded it." And it's the first one!

Quote
When it was reported that Clinton was would be honored at the GLAAD Awards, many criticized the decision - especially after the president was under fire for an op-ed piece he wrote for the Washington Post in which he urged the Supreme Court to overturn DOMA. Many political pundits, bloggers, and activists echoed the heckler’s sentiments and rejected Clinton’s piece as a political expediency.

Clinton signed DOMA because "he refused to be leader on a civil rights issue, irrationally fearful of the ramifications of vetoing the bill and rationalizing the damage caused by signing it," Michelangelo Signorile wrote in The Huffington Post. The Washington Blade’s editor-in-chief, Kevin Naff, opined that Clinton’s late apology is a "typically cynical, desperate bid to rewrite history." He wrote that Clinton’s op-ed is "a naked attempt to get on the right side of history before the Supreme Court strikes down DOMA. He sounds desperate, highlighting the fact that ’DOMA came to my desk, opposed by only 81 of the 535 members of Congress.’"

The organization should probably brace itself for blowback. Typical were the commentson gay blogsite JoeMyGod.

"Yet another example of the zero accountability culture in Washington DC.," wrote one. "Is this organization trying to self-destruct and become a laughing stock?" wrote another. "To my gay eyes it appears to exist solely to have glitzy awards ceremonies."

"This seems about par for the course, honoring someone who signed the most discriminatory act against gay and lesbians in history," wrote a commenter on Towleroad. "If he doesn’t acknowledge the damage DOMA has caused to millions of people and apologize for it then I hope he gets booed," wrote another.

The more I think about this, the more it angers me.

Regarding the article concerning NBA player Jason Collins:

I found out on the local news here in the San Francisco (big news out in this area) about Jason Collins.
His silent gesture of solidarity with gay men is his jersey number 98 to remember the year Matthew Shepard was killed.

A plea on behalf of 'foreign' readers: please could American acronyms and abbreviations be explained? This week we have NOM, PAC, AUP, even NBA (in the article - ok, I guessed "American sport, probably baseball" Smiley). Some of them I half know or guess at, but if space allows I'd appreciate a brief reminder!

Sorry Sara!  I hadn't thought of that.

NOM is National Organization for Marriage.

NBA is National Basketball Association.

AUP is American Unity Pac.

PAC is Political Action Commitee.

Just for accuracy's sake, Messiah College in Pennsylvania is (German) Brethren in heritage, not Catholic. Though officially nondenominational.
