Columbine makes Publishers Weekly's all-time True Crime Top 10

This is pretty cool. For the second time this month, Columbine made an all-time Top 10 True Crime Books list.

This week, it was chosen as #3 by Publishers Weekly (right behind Truman Capote and Janet Malcolm — nice company!)

All-time 10 Best True Crime Books: Columbine, Publishers Weekly

A few weeks ago, Reader's Digest listed it #1—right before In Cold Blood! That tickled me.

All-time 10 Best True Crime Books: Columbine, Reader's Digest

In the past few years, Columbine made all-time Top 9 lists from Barnes & Noble (third, after The Stranger Beside me and Helter Skelter), and Huffington Post (seventh), Bustle's Top 10, and a Top 18 list from BuzzFeed's readers. (Odd numbers, but maybe true crime fans just like to be different. haha.)

There were a lot of consensus picks, though only two made all six lists: In Cold Blood (#1 on two) and Columbine (#1 on one).

After that:

  • Helter Skleter made four lists.

  • The Stranger Beside Me made three lists, but was #1 on two.

  • Seven books made two lists:

  • The Journalist and the Murderer (#1 on one).

  • Devil in the White City (my favorite).

  • Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (which kind of bored me).

  • John Grisham's The Innocent Man made two (I need to check that out).

  • Fatal Vision.

  • Under The Banner of Heaven.

  • Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song. (Despite winning the Pulitzer. It's the only one whose reputation seems to have faded over time. only made one. I didn't like it at all, and gave up after 100 pages. People seem to love or hate it.)

Of course there are many more lists, though these same names tend to recur. I'm thrilled to be among them!
